Domain lock and transfer protection

Your domain is one of your most valuable business assets. The transfer lock stops it from being moved to another registrar unless you decide to unlock it.

What you get

Blocks unwanted transfers

A locked domain can't be moved to another registrar.

One switch

Turn the lock on or off from your domain page in the portal.

No effect on your site

Your website, email and DNS changes all keep working while it is locked.

Safer EPP codes

The transfer code stays hidden until you choose to unlock the domain.

Why lock your domain?

If someone gets into your email or account, they may try to move your domain away, and getting it back can be slow and difficult. Keeping the lock on adds a step that makes this much harder.

For most people, the right setting is simple: keep it on all the time, and turn it off only when you really want to move the domain.

Moving your domain away

When you are ready to transfer, turn off the lock in your portal and copy your EPP code. Your new registrar will ask for that code to start the transfer.

Registry rules can stop a transfer in some situations, for example shortly after a domain is registered or transferred. Turn the lock back on if you change your mind.
